The Pond
There was, in the past, a spring which flowed from the side wall, known as “el Manaero” and just below this there was a pond in the slate rock. In the middle of the 10th century the water was channelled into a stone basin to serve as a drinking trough and washing station – uses which survive to this day.
The long stone basin fits into the slope of the street. A small wall runs parallel, topped with large slate slabs, used for scrubbing clothes. This system avoided the contamination of the drinking trough with soapy water and the washerwomen didn’t have to kneel down to wash their clothes.
